Pain & Panic

Written by:

I was born in 1993 which means I move through everyday life with the entirety of Disney’s Hercules memorized. One thing I love because of how stupid it is that the film’s villain Hades, ruler of the underworld iconically voiced by James Woods, repeatedly assigns so much responsibility on his two imbecilic minions, pain and panic, who of course screw everything up. In moments of real sorrow — for instance, a paralyzing self-loathing which I am prone to — simply calling to mind the thought of them screeching “WE ARE WORMS!” can get a little giggle going deep down in me. And from there, sometimes, I can wrestle free just a little more livable space to breathe in. That shit saves my life, again.

I grew up watching media and that means now it is essential to my imaginative standpoint — that is, the place from which I think from, the where of this moment of embodied cognition expressed through digital practice (and the next one). It means I can laugh at myself and if I can’t laugh then there is something that really has ahold of me.
